Interventions

Interventions

While there is no “cure” (a term I dislike) for Asperger’s, there are lots of interventions for helping and improving the lives of people with Asperger’s. I personally recommend, and wish I had received better education in social skills. So I try to emphasis to the greatest extent possible of getting parents to teach their children social skills and the importance of them understanding why they need them. You could be the smartest most talented person on the planet, but without social skills you will have a rough life.

There are lots of people that are important key players in the development and education of children and adults with Asperger’s in preparation for their success.

Mothers

The first and most important person is their mother or caregiver. This person is the one that must implement and constantly use opportunities in daily living to teach children and young adults social skills and interactions with other people. The mother is the one there when the situation occurs, the one the child sees and trusts most. So the mother’s duty and performance is the most important.

Professionals
Psychologists are very important in the development of a child with Asperger’s and the help for an Asperger’s adult. Depression can be a problem for people with Asperger’s that desire and need social interactions and friends but don’t know how to make and keep friends, or many not recognize the importance of social skills. Professional help should be sought for your child.

Teachers

All teachers WILL encounter a student on the ASD Spectrum. It is important that teachers understand Asperger’s, as a person with Asperger’s success can depend on it. Teachers are there in the room and in the playground and can help your child learn about social interactions with their peers.

Medication

Medication is often used for people with Asperger’s. However, this can be controversial. I personally do not support medicating children for the convenience of the people around them. I believe that a person should only be medicated if it helps that person being medicated, not others bothered by their behaviors.

Education

Perhaps the best intervention for Asperger’s is education. Reading books, joining our Asperger’s Book Club, interacting with other parents and persons with Asperger’s, you greatly improve the odds of your child succeeding in life, and having more social interactions.
